Located in the historic center of Madrid, the Hotel Edition rises from the footprint of the former headquarters of the Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad. It had an old chapel whose baroque façade attributed to Pedro de Rivera, is still preserved. Surrounded by historic and emblematic buildings, located in the Plaza de las Descalzas, it faces the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales. Beside it is the preserved Casa de las Alhajas, an old pawnbroking foundation that belonged to the Monte de Piedad complex.
The project drawn up by OAB and RLA reorganizes the interior of the building maintaining the structure and its enclosure, changing only the windows but maintaining the rhythm of the openings. The hotel has 200 rooms with 30 suites and 2 luxurious penthouses. The public areas consist of a Skybar on the 4th floor with its terrace and infinity pool, a lounge bar in the lobby, a restaurant, a nightclub and small cocktail bar, as well as a gym and a spa.
The main access from Plaza de Celenque is one of the most characteristic spaces of the Hotel. The protagonist: a spiral staircase inserted in a wooden oak box of double height. This element has been a real constructive challenge. It is built from welded steel plates, with a lot of work by great steel craftsmen, and is supported by a continuous truss that also acts as a railing. To minimize vibrations, two hidden springs have been installed in the steps, which offset the vibration waves in order to reach the comfort range. The final finish of the staircase must be a paint resistant to fire and vibrations. Moreover, through the use of the sponge painting technique, a texture similar to that of the stucco applied in the upper floor is achieved.
The Lobby Bar and reception area communicate with the main entrance through the spiral staircase. It has another access from the Plaza de las Descalzas, through the Baroque Façade, from which a vaulted passageway is projected that also gives access to the main restaurant of the Hotel.
The lobby on the ground floor stands out for its characteristic undulating acoustic ceiling, which has supposed another great construction challenge, since there are no products in the market meeting these acoustic requirements capable of reproducing the wave geometry. After a long process of research, trial and error, a good result has been achieved without losing its acoustic insulation or aesthetics.
The rooms have a sober and elegant interior design, with very pure lines that contrast with the softer and more organic component of the furniture, designed by Françoise Champsaur. The headboard is a reinterpretation of the Baroque Façade with its Plateresque-style.
The Supper Club stands out within the services of the Hotel. It is a nightclub located on two levels, with warm finishes such as golden stucco and burgundy velvet, which contrast with the more sober lines of the rest of the Hotel. A theater lighting rack illuminates the double-height space, where an elegant retro-illuminated onyx bar presides over the hall from the background.
The Skybar is organized like a small oasis of vegetation, covered with warm finishes, where Iroko wood predominates. With two bars, one indoors and another one outdoors, a large fireplace, garden areas and an infinity pool, the Edition terrace aims to position itself as one of the reference “roof tops” in the city of Madrid.
